Hip Hop is a street style of dance that focuses on self-expression and movement that involves the whole body.
Hip-Hop is a high-energy dance style that evolved from the urban African-American culture in the latter half of the 20th Century. Hip-hop includes various moves such as breaking, popping, locking, krumping and gymnastics forms. Improvisation and personal interpretation are essential to hip-hop dancing. Hip Hop has developed many different styles within its genre and gives dancers a socially acceptable way to express themselves individually with movement. This is an excellent class to introduce boys to dance.
HIP HOP CLASSES
Hip-hop dance is primarily performed to hip-hop music or music that has evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s. The television show Soul Train and the 1980s films Breakin’, Beat Street, and Wild Style showcased these crews and dance styles in their early stages; therefore, giving hip-hop mainstream exposure. What distinguishes hip-hop from other forms of dance is that it is often “freestyle” (improvisational) in nature and hip-hop dance crews often engage in freestyle dance competitions— “battles”. Crews, freestyling, and battles are identifiers of this style.
Classes are available for all ages and levels of students and run for 60-120 minutes.
There are no uniform requirements for this class, however students are encouraged to wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing and runners.
