Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion.
Tap dance is one of, if not the most exciting dances to not only learn but to watch as it gives dancers creative freedom to work with the music and their audience. Over the last few years tap dance has seen a resurgence in popularity and is seen as a dance which is smoother than other styles but doesn’t compromise on the technical aspect.
Through the use of a metal “tap” affixed to the sole of the shoes to toes and heels dancers create a percussion of rhythmical sound, through this dancers can either create their own drum with or without the use of music.
At Dance United School of Dance we offer open tap classes which incorporates the classic styles of Fred Astaire and also the more recent Tap Dog style of tap. These classes are a fun way to express your artistry in the form of beats.
Tap classes are designed to develop rhythm, style, and sound. Exercises focus on building flexibility and strength of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement. The class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique, producing clear tap sounds, and having fun. As students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.
Tap classes are taught by Dance United Principal Miss Nicole or Dance United alumni Miss Madeline and run for 60 minutes each session.
Ballet class is compulsory if attending jazz, contemporary, pointe and competition classes from 7 yrs and over.
